Clinical notes
Hydration: Nursing mothers need about 3.8 litres (16 cups) of total fluid per day. Drink to thirst and keep water nearby during feeds — you will naturally feel thirstier while nursing.
Key nutrients: Continue your prenatal vitamin while nursing. Focus on choline (eggs, salmon), DHA (fatty fish), iodine (dairy, iodised salt), and vitamin D. Caffeine should stay under 300 mg/day.
Safe weight loss: Gradual weight loss of 0.5 kg (1 lb) per week is considered safe and does not reduce milk supply for most women. Rapid dieting, very low-calorie plans, and dehydration can all diminish supply. Never drop below 1,800 kcal/day while nursing.
