How the Lifetime Earnings Calculator Formula Works

The calculator compounds your salary annually and sums every year’s total earnings from your current age until retirement.

Annual Salary in Year N:
Salary_N = Starting Salary × (1 + Raise Rate)^(N−1)

Additional Income in Year N:
Additional_N = Starting Additional × (1 + Raise Rate)^(N−1)

Total Earnings in Year N:
Earnings_N = Salary_N + Additional_N

Lifetime Earnings:
Lifetime Earnings = Σ Earnings_N for N = 1 to Working Years

Working Years:
Working Years = Retirement Age − Current Age − Career Break Years

If retirement age is less than or equal to current age, the calculator flags an invalid range. If both salary and additional income are zero, it flags no income. If career break exceeds remaining working years, it flags no working years. Otherwise, it computes the schedule, sums the totals, and classifies the result.

Worked Example

A 25-year-old earns $55,000 per year, receives a 3% annual raise, and earns an extra $3,000 per year from a side project. They plan to retire at 65 with no career breaks.

Step 1 – Working years:
65 − 25 = 40 years.

Step 2 – Final salary:
$55,000 × (1.03)^39 ≈ $55,000 × 3.17 ≈ $174,350.

Step 3 – Total base earnings (no raises):
$55,000 × 40 = **$2,200,000**.

Step 4 – Total additional income:
$3,000 × 40 = **$120,000**.

Step 5 – Total earnings with raises:
Summing each year’s salary and additional income with 3% annual growth gives approximately $4,150,000.

Step 6 – Raise impact:
$4,150,000 − $2,200,000 − $120,000 = **$1,830,000** from compounding raises.

Step 7 – Average annual salary:
$4,150,000 ÷ 40 ≈ **$103,750**.

Step 8 – Classification:
$4.15M is above $2.5M, so the badge is Excellent Career Earnings (🏆).

Interpretation:
Starting at age 25 with a $55,000 salary and 3% annual raises, you’ll work 40 years until retirement at 65. Your final salary will be approximately $174,350/year. Over your career, you’ll earn $4,150,000 total including $2,200,000 base salary, $1,830,000 from raises, and $120,000 from additional income. Average annual earnings: $103,750. Your projected lifetime earnings are impressive. With disciplined saving and investing, you can achieve financial independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lifetime Earnings Calculator and how does it work?

The Lifetime Earnings Calculator projects your total career earnings from your current age to retirement. It compounds your salary and additional income by your annual raise percentage, sums each year’s earnings, and reports totals, milestones, and a year-by-year table.

How is lifetime earnings calculated?

It multiplies your starting salary by (1 + raise rate) for each year, adds additional income that grows at the same rate, and sums all annual totals over your working years.

What raise rate should I use?

Typical annual raises range from 2% to 4%. Job changes can yield 10–20% raises. Use a conservative rate for long-term planning unless you have specific reasons to expect faster growth.

Does the calculator account for inflation?

No. The figures are nominal, they show the actual dollar amounts you would earn in each future year. Inflation would reduce purchasing power, so consider adjusting your goals accordingly.

Can I include bonuses or side income?

Yes. Enter any additional annual income in the designated field. It grows at the same rate as your base salary.

How do career breaks affect lifetime earnings?

Career breaks reduce the number of working years. The calculator subtracts break years from the total working years, lowering lifetime earnings by the amount you would have earned during those years.

What is a good lifetime earnings target?

There is no universal target. Average lifetime earnings vary by education, field, and location. The calculator classifies totals from modest to high to help you interpret your result.

Is the Lifetime Earnings Calculator free?

Yes, it is completely free and runs in your browser. No registration or data submission is required.

Can I use this calculator for retirement planning?

Yes. Lifetime earnings is a key input for retirement planning. Pair it with a savings goal calculator or FIRE calculator to determine how much you need to save.

What if my retirement age is lower than my current age?

The calculator will flag an invalid age range. Ensure retirement age is greater than current age.
