How the Paver Sand Calculator Formula Works

The calculator works from one clean geometric relationship: a paved surface is a rectangular slab of sand, so its volume is the area multiplied by the depth.

Formula: Area = Width × Length
Formula: Volume = Area × Depth
Formula: Weight = Volume × Density

Every length you enter is converted to metres first, so mixing feet for the patio and centimetres for the depth causes no problems.   • Total cost = 0.528 × 52 = $27.46

Can I use this paver sand calculator for polymeric sand?

Yes, provided you enter the correct density. The preset for polymeric sand loads 1,550 kg/m³, which is a reasonable starting point. Note that polymeric sand is usually swept into joints rather than spread as a bedding layer, so the depth you enter should match the application you are actually planning.

 

Does the tool account for sand that fills the paver joints?

No. The calculation covers the bedding layer only, based on area multiplied by depth. Joint sand is a separate quantity that depends on paver size, joint width and surface area. Add it manually or order extra to cover both.

 

What depth should I enter for a driveway versus a patio?
