Each breed category has a minimum coop space and run space per bird:

Coop Area = Number of Chickens ร Coop Space per Bird
Time-in-Coop Adjustment:
The coop area is adjusted based on how many hours per day chickens spend inside:
More than 12 hours inside: coop area ร 1.2 (20% increase for comfort)
4 to 12 hours: no adjustment (standard free-range schedule)
Fewer than 4 hours inside: coop area ร 0.9 (10% reduction, as birds spend most time outdoors)
Run Area Calculation:
Run Area is determined by run access:
Full access: Run Area = Number of Chickens ร Run Space per Bird
Limited access: Run Area = Number of Chickens ร Run Space per Bird ร 0.6
No run: Run Area = 0
Coop Dimensions:
Recommended dimensions are calculated by finding a square-ish footprint: the length is the ceiling of the square root of the coop area, and the width is the ceiling of the area divided by the length. This provides a practical rectangular dimension for planning purposes.
Nesting Boxes:
One nesting box is recommended for every 4 chickens, with a minimum of 1. The formula is: Nesting Boxes = Max(1, Ceiling(Flock รท 4)). If nesting boxes are not included, this value is zero.
Cost Calculations:
Material Cost = Coop Area ร Building Material Price per sq ft
Fencing Cost = Run Area ร Fencing Price per sq ft
Total Cost = Material Cost + Fencing Cost
Currency Conversion:
All costs are calculated in USD and converted to the selected currency using built-in exchange rates. Currencies without decimal usage (JPY, KRW, VND, INR) are rounded to whole numbers.
Space Quality Assessment:
The calculator classifies the resulting coop space per bird into three tiers: under 2 sq ft per bird is very tight, 2โ3.5 sq ft is minimum space, and above 3.5 sq ft is comfortable. How accurate is this chicken coop calculator?
The calculator applies widely accepted space recommendations from poultry husbandry resources. It provides reliable minimum estimates. Actual space needs may vary with management style, climate, and individual flock dynamics. Many keepers recommend exceeding these minimums.
Can I use this calculator for mixed-breed flocks?
Yes. Select the breed size of your largest birds, or calculate separately for each breed group and add the results. Mixing bantams with large breeds requires using the large breed space requirements for the entire flock.
What if I live in a cold climate?
Cold-climate chickens may spend more time inside the coop during winter. Set the “Time in coop” to a higher number like 16โ20 hours to trigger the 20% space increase. This ensures adequate interior room for winter confinement.
Do chicks need less space than adult chickens?
Chicks require less space initially but grow quickly. Plan for adult space requirements from the start to avoid needing to expand or rehome birds as they mature. The calculator is designed for adult birds.
How important is run space compared to coop space?
Both are essential. Run space affects daytime behavior, exercise, and foraging opportunities. Coop space affects nighttime comfort and winter confinement. Inadequate either can cause stress and health problems. The calculator treats them separately.
