Gold Melt Calculator
This Gold Melt Calculator turns karat, purity, weight, market price, and dealer spread into a clear gold value summary. Enter grams and price per gram, then review pure gold content, possession value, bid price, ask price, and round-trip cost. It works in 22 display currencies and updates instantly in your browser. Get a fast, no-math estimate for scrap, coins, or jewellery.
Before a refiner, jeweller, or pawnbroker makes an offer on gold, it helps to know what the metal is worth on its own terms. The Gold Melt Calculator estimates that baseline by combining purity, weight, and a market price you provide. It is built for people sorting scrap jewellery, comparing coin deals, checking an inheritance, or pressure-testing a dealer quote. Enter the karat or custom purity, the weight in grams, the price per gram, and the dealer spread. The tool then shows pure gold content, possession value, bid and ask prices per gram, sell value, buy cost, and round-trip spread cost. Because the math is transparent, you can see exactly where a quote comes from. Use it as a quick reference before negotiating, not as a live trading terminal.
How to Use the Gold Melt Calculator

How the Gold Melt Calculator Formula Works
At its core, possession value is the market value of the pure gold inside your item, not the retail or collectible value of the object.
Formula: Pure gold content (g) = weight (g) × (purity % ÷ 100)
Formula: Possession value = pure gold content × market price per gram
Formula: Spread amount per gram = market price × (spread % ÷ 100)
Formula: Bid price per gram = market price − (market price × spread % ÷ 200)
Formula: Ask price per gram = market price + (market price × spread % ÷ 200)
Formula: Sell value at bid = pure gold content × bid price per gram
Formula: Buy cost at ask = pure gold content × ask price per gram
Formula: Round-trip cost = buy cost at ask − sell value at bid
The calculator treats negative weight, market price, or spread entries as zero. Purity is limited to 0–100%, and spread is limited to 0–50%. If weight or market price is zero, the badge changes to a neutral prompt and the analysis asks for those inputs. The currency selector only changes the displayed symbol; it does not perform foreign-exchange conversion. The karat dropdown and chips use common gold trade purity percentages, while the Custom option lets you enter any purity within the allowed range.
Worked Example
Suppose you have a 35 g 18K gold chain. 18K is treated as 75% purity. You enter a market price of $72.50 per gram and a dealer spread of 4%.
Step 1: Calculate pure gold content.
35 g × 0.75 = 26.25 g of pure gold.
Step 2: Calculate possession value.
26.25 g × $72.50 = $1,903.13.
Step 3: Calculate the spread amount per gram.
$72.50 × 0.04 = $2.90.
Step 4: Calculate bid and ask prices.
Bid price = $72.50 − ($72.50 × 4 ÷ 200) = $71.05 per gram.
Ask price = $72.50 + ($72.50 × 4 ÷ 200) = $73.95 per gram.
Step 5: Calculate trade values.
Sell value at bid = 26.25 g × $71.05 = $1,865.06.
Buy cost at ask = 26.25 g × $73.95 = $1,941.19.
Round-trip cost = $1,941.19 − $1,865.06 = $76.13.
The possession value is about $1,903.13, but a dealer buying at the bid would pay closer to $1,865.06. The 4% spread is classified as a normal retail spread. This example shows why the melt value and the actual offer can differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Gold Melt Calculator?
A Gold Melt Calculator estimates the value of the pure gold in an item. It uses weight, purity, and a market price per gram to show possession value, then applies a dealer spread to show bid and ask prices.
How is gold melt value calculated?
Gold melt value is calculated by multiplying weight by purity as a decimal, then multiplying by the market price per gram. For example, 10 g of 50% gold at $60 per gram contains 5 g of pure gold and has a melt value of $300.
Does the calculator use live gold prices?
No. The Gold Melt Calculator does not fetch live prices. You enter the market price per gram yourself, so the result reflects the price you provide. Check a current spot price source before making a trade.
What karat purity does the tool support?
The karat dropdown includes 24K, 23K, 22K, 21K, 20K, 18K, 16K, 14K, 12K, 10K, 9K, and 8K, plus a Custom option. You can also type any purity from 0 to 100 directly into the purity field.
What is the difference between bid and ask price in gold trading?
The bid price is what a dealer would pay you for your gold, while the ask price is what a dealer would charge you to buy gold. The calculator splits your entered spread around the market price to estimate both.
How does the spread affect my gold sale?
A wider spread lowers the bid price and raises the ask price. That means you receive less when selling and pay more when buying. The calculator classifies spreads as tight, normal, wide, or very wide based on the percentage you enter.
Can I calculate 14K or 18K gold melt value?
Yes. You can select 14K or 18K from the karat dropdown, or use the karat chips for common purities. The tool then applies the matching purity percentage and updates the pure gold content, possession value, and trade prices.
Why does my possession value differ from what a dealer offers?
Possession value is the market value of the pure gold content. A dealer offer may be lower because of the bid spread, refining fees, assay costs, profit margin, or the condition of the item. The calculator separates possession value from bid and ask pricing so you can see the difference.
What is round-trip cost in gold trading?
Round-trip cost is the difference between buying at the ask price and selling at the bid price for the same amount of pure gold. It represents the spread cost you would pay if you entered and exited a position at those prices.
Is the Gold Melt Calculator free to use?
Yes. The Gold Melt Calculator is free and runs in your browser. It does not require a signup, and the calculations are performed on your device rather than on a remote server.
Can I use the calculator with any currency?
The currency dropdown changes the symbol shown for 22 currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, and others. It does not convert values, so you should enter the market price per gram in the same currency you select.
Does the tool work on mobile devices?
Yes. The calculator is built with a responsive layout that adapts to phones, tablets, and desktop screens. You can enter inputs, read the summary table, and copy or share results from a mobile browser.
