How the Tool Works

This Coffee Ratio Calculator uses standard brew ratios, strength modifiers, and simple unit conversions to determine the ideal coffee and water measurements.

Each brew method has a default base coffee-to-water ratio expressed as the fraction of coffee mass to water mass:

  • Drip / Filter: 1/17

  • Pour Over: 1/16

  • French Press: 1/15

  • Espresso: 1/2

  • Cold Brew: 1/8

  • Custom: user-defined coffee:water parts converted to an equivalent fraction

The strength preference further modifies the effective ratio through a multiplier applied to the water component:

  • Mild: base water multiplied by 1.18 (weaker brew)

  • Balanced: no change (× 1.0)

  • Strong: base water multiplied by 0.82 (stronger brew)

  • Very Strong: base water multiplied by 0.71 (strongest brew)

Adjusted Ratio = Base Ratio × (1 ÷ Strength Modifier)

When calculating by water amount, coffee grounds are determined as:
Coffee (grams) = Water (ml) × Adjusted Ratio

When calculating by coffee amount, water volume is determined as:
Water (ml) = Coffee (grams) ÷ Adjusted Ratio

Water unit conversions to milliliters:

  • 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 ml

  • 1 cup (8 oz) = 236.588 ml

Coffee unit conversions to grams:

  • 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams

  • 1 tablespoon ground coffee ≈ 5 grams

Caffeine is estimated at 10 mg per gram of coffee. Brew time recommendations are fixed per method: drip 4–5 minutes, pour-over 2.5–3.5 minutes, French press 4 minutes, espresso 25–30 seconds, cold brew 12–24 hours, custom varies.

 

Worked Example

Suppose you want to brew pour-over coffee with 500 ml of water at a balanced strength. Here is the step-by-step calculation:

  1. Pour-over base ratio: 1/16 = 0.0625.

  2. Balanced strength modifier: 1.0. Adjusted ratio remains 0.0625.

  3. Calculate by water amount: Coffee = 500 ml × 0.0625 = 31.25 grams.

  4. Ratio display: 1:16.0.

  5. Brew time recommendation: 2.5–3.5 minutes.

  6. Estimated caffeine: 31.25 g × 10 mg/g ≈ 313 mg.

If you prefer a strong pour-over instead, the strength modifier of 0.82 changes the adjusted ratio to 0.0625 × (1 ÷ 0.82) ≈ 0.0762. The same 500 ml of water now requires 500 × 0.0762 ≈ 38.1 grams of coffee, displayed as a 1:13.1 ratio. This example shows how strength preference directly influences the amount of coffee you should measure, and why using a scale with ratio-based calculations produces far better consistency than fixed scoop measurements.

The calculator uses standard industry ratios and precise unit conversions. It is accurate for planning brews, though grind size and water temperature also affect final extraction.

Can I use this calculator for tea?
The calculator is optimized for coffee brewing. Tea uses very different steeping ratios and times and is not directly supported by this tool.

What is the difference between a 1:15 and a 1:17 ratio?
A 1:15 ratio uses more coffee per unit of water, producing a stronger, heavier-bodied cup. A 1:17 ratio uses less coffee, yielding a lighter, more delicate brew.

How do I switch between calculating by water and by coffee?

Does the strength setting override the brew method ratio?
