Important notes
This tool is a starting point for conversation, not a diagnosis. Quality of life is deeply personal. Only you and your veterinarian can decide what is right for your cat.
When bad days outnumber good days and a healthy human-animal bond is no longer possible, your cat's quality of life may be too low. If your cat is suffering needlessly, it may be time to consider the gift of a peaceful passing.
Always involve your veterinarian. A vet can assess pain control, hydration, and other factors you may not be able to measure at home. They can also help you understand treatment options and prognosis.
Based on the HHHHHMM Quality-of-Life Scale developed by Dr. Alice Villalobos, DVM — the veterinary standard for assessing quality of life in cats and dogs. A total above 35 out of 70 represents acceptable quality of life to continue with hospice care.
