The calculator multiplies your cat’s weight in kilograms by the dose rate attached to the chosen health goal. That gives the daily EPA + DHA target in milligrams. A ceiling is applied on top so the result never exceeds what’s generally considered safe without veterinary supervision.

Worked Example: A 4.8 kg Cat With Arthritis

Your cat weighs 4.8 kg and your vet has suggested fish oil for stiff back legs. You select the arthritis goal, which uses 50 mg/kg.

  1. Dose rate for arthritis: 50 mg/kg EPA + DHA per day

  2. Weight in kg: 4.8

  3. Daily EPA + DHA: 4.8 × 50 = 240 mg

  5. Capped? No. 240 mg is below the ceiling.

The target is 240 mg of EPA + DHA per day. Now check your supplement. A typical 1000 mg fish oil capsule with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA delivers 300 mg of active omega-3s. That’s more than the target. Half a capsule would be closer, but splitting oil capsules is messy. A liquid fish oil with a known concentration per millilitre is easier to measure at this range. Ask your vet whether a slightly lower dose, say one capsule every other day, would work just as well.
