Reaching a seven-figure portfolio is a common financial milestone, but the timeline depends on factors you can control: how much you invest, how consistently you invest, and how long you let compound growth work. This Millionaire Calculator turns those variables into a clear projection. It accepts a custom millionaire target, supports 22 currencies, and displays progress through $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000 milestones. The tool uses monthly compounding for both your starting balance and ongoing contributions, so the result reflects realistic month-by-month growth. All calculations run in your browser, keeping your financial data private. Use it to test different savings rates, returns, and starting ages to see how small changes compound over decades.

How to Use the Millionaire Calculator

  1. Select your currency from the dropdown menu.

  2. Enter your current age.

  3. Input your current invested assets.

  4. Enter your monthly contribution.

  5. Set your expected annual return rate.

  6. Adjust the millionaire target if you want a goal other than $1,000,000.

  7. Optionally choose a compounding frequency (the projection applies monthly compounding to contributions).

  8. Click Calculate to refresh the projection.

  9. Review the years to millionaire, age at millionaire, total contributions, and interest earned.

  10. Check the progress bar, wealth milestones, and year-by-year table.

  11. Use the quick example buttons to test early starter, aggressive saver, late starter, dual income, and FIRE seeker scenarios.

How the Millionaire Calculator Formula Works

The calculator projects your portfolio month by month using a monthly compounding formula. The annual return is divided by 12 to get the monthly rate, and contributions are added at the end of each month.

Monthly Rate:
i = Annual Return ÷ 12

Portfolio Balance After n Months:
FV = PV × (1 + i)^n + PMT × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i]

Where:

  • PV = current invested assets

  • PMT = monthly contribution

  • i = monthly interest rate

  • n = number of months

Time to Target:
The calculator iterates month by month until the balance reaches or exceeds the target. It caps the search at 80 years.

Total Contributions:
Total Contributions = PV + (PMT × n)

Interest Earned:
Interest Earned = Final Balance − Total Contributions

Milestones:
The calculator tracks four fixed milestones: $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000. Each milestone shows whether it has been achieved, the projected age at achievement, and a progress bar.

Classification:
The result is classified by years to target: Fast Track (≤10 years), On Track (10–20 years), Long-Term (20–30 years), Extended (30–50 years), or Very Long (>50 years). If the target cannot be reached within 80 years, it is marked unreachable.

Worked Example

A 28-year-old has $50,000 invested, contributes $2,500 per month, and expects a 9% annual return. The target is $1,000,000.

Step 1 – Monthly rate:
9% ÷ 12 = 0.75% (0.0075)

Step 2 – Months to target:
Using the formula and iterating month by month, the balance reaches $1,000,000 in approximately 167 months.

Step 3 – Years and age:
167 ÷ 12 = 13.9 years
Age at millionaire = 28 + 13.9 = 41.9 years old

Step 4 – Contributions and interest:
Total contributions = $50,000 + ($2,500 × 167) = $467,500**
Interest earned = $1,000,000 − $467,500 = **$532,500

Step 5 – Classification:
13.9 years falls in the On Track (10–20 years) category.

Interpretation:
Starting with $50,000 at age 28, contributing $2,500 per month at 9% annual return, you’ll reach $1,000,000 in about 13.9 years at age 41.9. Interest makes up 53.3% of your millionaire balance. Consider maximizing tax-advantaged accounts and keeping investment fees low.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Millionaire Calculator and how does it work?

The Millionaire Calculator projects when your portfolio will reach $1,000,000 or a custom target. It uses monthly compounding, adding your monthly contribution to the balance each month and applying the monthly return. It iterates until the target is reached or 80 years pass.

How does the calculator determine years to $1,000,000?

It converts your annual return to a monthly rate, then repeats the calculation “balance = balance × (1 + monthly rate) + monthly contribution” until the balance meets or exceeds the target. The number of months is then divided by 12.

What annual return should I use?

Historically, diversified stock portfolios have returned about 7–10% annually before inflation. Savings accounts and bonds return less. Use a conservative estimate for short timelines and a moderate estimate for long timelines. The calculator does not adjust for inflation or taxes.

Does compounding frequency affect the result?

The interface includes a compounding frequency selector, but the current projection applies monthly compounding to both the starting balance and contributions. Changing the selector does not change the result in this version.

Can I set a custom millionaire target?

Yes. The target field defaults to $1,000,000 but accepts any amount from $100,000 upward. The milestone cards still reference $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000.

How much do I need to save monthly to become a millionaire?

It depends on your starting age, current assets, and return. For example, starting at 30 with $25,000 and an 8% return, contributing $1,000 per month reaches $1,000,000 in about 30 years. Contributing $2,000 per month shortens it to roughly 21 years.

Why is my timeline so long?

A long timeline usually reflects low monthly contributions, a low starting balance, a low return, or a late start. Increasing any of those inputs especially monthly contributions will shorten the timeline.

Is $1,000,000 still enough to retire?

That depends on your expenses and withdrawal rate. A common rule is the 4% rule: $1,000,000 supports about $40,000 per year in retirement income. If your expenses are higher, you may need a larger target.

Does starting early really matter?

Yes. Compound growth rewards time more than any other input. Starting at 25 instead of 35 can shorten the timeline by several years even with the same monthly contribution.

Can I use this calculator for FIRE planning?

Yes. Many FIRE planners use $1,000,000 or a multiple of annual expenses as a target. This calculator shows the timeline to that number. For a complete FIRE plan, pair it with a FIRE Calculator that accounts for expenses and safe withdrawal rates.
