Introduction
The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was the United States Army’s standard physical fitness assessment for decades before being replaced by the ACFT in 2019. This APFT calculator uses the legacy scoring system based on three events: push-ups completed in 2 minutes (maximum 100 points), sit-ups completed in 2 minutes (maximum 100 points), and a 2-mile run (maximum 100 points), for a total possible score of 300 points. While the Army now uses the ACFT, many soldiers still need APFT scores for historical records, grandfather clauses, promotion points for those who served during the APFT era, and ROTC programs that haven’t fully transitioned. The calculator applies gender and age adjustments with scoring tables for ages 17 through 62 across 10 age groups. This tool is for veterans tracking historical scores, ROTC cadets using legacy standards, soldiers with APFT grandfathering, and anyone curious about pre-2020 Army fitness standards. Toolraxy provides this APFT calculator to preserve access to this important military fitness benchmark.
How to Use
Select your gender (Male or Female)
Enter your age in years (17-62)
Enter your push-ups completed in 2 minutes
Enter your sit-ups completed in 2 minutes
Enter your 2-mile run time in minutes and seconds

See your total APFT score out of 300
Note that 180 points with no event below 60 is minimum passing
How the Tool Works
The APFT calculator follows official US Army legacy scoring with linear interpolation between minimum and maximum thresholds.
Formula Structure:
Each event score = 0-100 points based on performance relative to age and gender-specific standards.
Age Groups (10 categories):
Push-Up Standards (2 minutes) – Max 100 pts, Min 0 pts:
Sit-Up Standards (2 minutes):
2-Mile Run Standards (seconds) – Lower time = Better:
Scoring Formula (Push-ups & Sit-ups – higher is better):
Points = ((reps − minReps) ÷ (maxReps − minReps)) × 100
Scoring Formula (Run – lower time is better):
Points = 100 − ((seconds − minSeconds) ÷ (maxSeconds − minSeconds)) × 100
Total Score:
APFT Score = PushupPoints + SitupPoints + RunPoints (maximum 300)
Passing Standards:
Validation Behavior:
Values below minimum return 0 points
Values above maximum cap at 100 points
Age below 17 defaults to 17, above 62 defaults to 62
Run seconds automatically convert from minutes and seconds
Worked Example
Real-World Scenario: Male Soldier, Age 25, APFT for Record
A 25-year-old male soldier prepares for his APFT before the transition to ACFT.
Profile:
Gender: Male
Age: 25 years (Age Group 1: 22-26)
Event: Push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile run
Performance Data:
Push-ups: 72 reps in 2 minutes
Sit-ups: 78 reps in 2 minutes
2-Mile Run: 13 minutes 45 seconds (825 seconds)
Step-by-Step Scoring:
Age Group Determination: Age 25 falls in group 1 (22-26 years)
Push-ups: Male group 1 min 27, max 75 reps. (72 − 27) ÷ (75 − 27) = 45 ÷ 48 = 0.9375 × 100 = 94 points
Sit-ups: Male group 1 min 32, max 80 reps. (78 − 32) ÷ (80 − 32) = 46 ÷ 48 = 0.9583 × 100 = 96 points
2-Mile Run: Male group 1 min 870 seconds (14:30), max 1110 seconds (18:30). Run time 825 seconds is BELOW min time. Score = 100 points (maximum)
Total Score: 94 + 96 + 100 = 290 points out of 300
Result Interpretation:
Total score of 290 points exceeds the passing minimum of 180. The soldier achieves an “Excellent” rating with maximum run points, near-maximum push-ups and sit-ups. This score qualifies for maximum promotion points under APFT standards and reflects outstanding physical fitness.

FAQs
How accurate is this APFT calculator?
This calculator uses official US Army APFT scoring tables from FM 7-22 (October 2012). Scores match official Army scoring within 1 point. For historical records, these are the accepted standards.
What is the minimum passing APFT score?
Minimum passing is 180 points total with no individual event score below 60 points. Soldiers scoring below 180 or below 60 in any event fail the APFT.
Can I still take the APFT instead of ACFT?
No. The Army officially replaced the APFT with the ACFT in 2019. However, some ROTC programs and grandfather clauses may still accept APFT scores. Check with your unit.
What is the difference between APFT and ACFT?
APFT has 3 events (push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile run) scoring 0-100 each, total 300. ACFT has 6 events (deadlift, power throw, push-ups, SDC, leg tuck/plank, run) scoring 0-100 each, total 600.
How do age groups work for APFT scoring?
Your age group is determined by your age on the test date. There are 10 groups from 17-21 through 62+. Turning 30 means using 27-31 standards for tests after your birthday.
What APFT score do I need for promotion?
Under APFT standards, soldiers received promotion points: 80 points for 270-300, 70 for 240-269, 60 for 210-239, 50 for 180-209. Higher scores improved promotion standing.
Does body weight affect APFT score?
Yes. Heavier soldiers typically perform fewer push-ups and slower run times. Lighter soldiers generally excel at push-ups and running but standards account for gender, not weight.
Can pregnant soldiers take the APFT?
Pregnant soldiers were exempt from APFT testing during pregnancy and for up to 12 months postpartum. Modified standards applied during recovery period.
How often were APFT tests required?
Active duty soldiers tested semi-annually (every 6 months). Soldiers scoring 270+ tested annually. National Guard and Reserve tested annually. ROTC cadets tested each semester.
What happens if I failed the APFT?
Failure required retesting within 90 days and enrollment in a fitness improvement program. Two consecutive failures could result in denial of promotion, school attendance, or separation.
Does the APFT calculator work for veterans?
Yes. Veterans can use this calculator to reconstruct historical APFT scores for records, VA disability claims, or personal tracking using their performance at time of service.
What was considered an excellent APFT score?
270-299 points was “Excellent.” 300 points was “Maximum.” These scores indicated top-tier physical fitness and qualified soldiers for selective schools and assignments.
