How to Use the ICC World Cup Calculator

1. Click “Add ICC Teams” to add the ten standard World Cup teams, or enter custom team names individually.

2. Select Team 1 and Team 2 from the dropdowns in the Simulate Match section.

3. Choose the match result: Team 1 wins, Team 2 wins, or Tie/No Result.

4. Enter the runs scored and overs faced for both teams.

5. Click “Simulate Match” to add the result to the tournament.

6. The points table updates automatically with positions, matches played, wins, losses, ties, points, and NRR for each team.

7. Review the match history below the table. Use the Reset button to start over.

How the Tool Works

This ICC World Cup Calculator maintains team and match data in memory and recalculates the full points table after every match is added.

Points System:
The standard ICC tournament points system is applied:

• Win: 2 points

• Tie or No Result: 1 point

• Loss: 0 points

Team Statistics:
For each team, the calculator tracks:

• Played: total matches involving the team

• Won: matches where the team was the winner

• Lost: matches where the team was the loser

• Tied/No Result: matches with no winner

• Points: sum of points from all matches

Net Run Rate Calculation:
NRR is calculated using the standard cricket formula:
NRR = (Total Runs Scored ÷ Total Overs Faced) – (Total Runs Conceded ÷ Total Overs Bowled)

The calculator accumulates runs and overs for each team across all their matches. Overs are treated as decimal values where 0.1 represents one ball (six balls per over). The NRR is rounded to three decimal places.

Standings Sorting:
The points table is sorted first by points in descending order. Teams with equal points are sorted by NRR in descending order. This matches the ICC tie-breaking rules. Teams outside the top four are visually marked as eliminated when more than four teams exist.

Team Management:
Teams can be added individually by name or loaded from the standard ICC team list. Removing a team also removes all matches involving that team. The reset function clears all data.

Match Simulation:
Each simulated match requires two different teams, a result, and valid scores. The calculator validates inputs to prevent errors such as selecting the same team for both sides or entering zero runs or overs. A confirmation prompt warns when the selected result contradicts the actual run differential.

Worked Example

Consider a mini-tournament with three teams, Australia, India, and England and two matches played:

Match 1: Australia 280/50 overs def. India 240/45 overs.

• Australia: Played 1, Won 1, Points 2. NRR: (280÷50) – (240÷45) = 5.60 – 5.33 = +0.267.

• India: Played 1, Lost 1, Points 0. NRR: (240÷45) – (280÷50) = 5.33 – 5.60 = -0.267.

Match 2: India 320/50 overs def. England 310/48 overs.

• India: Played 2, Won 1, Lost 1, Points 2. NRR: ((240+320)÷(45+50)) – ((280+310)÷(50+48)) = (560÷95) – (590÷98) = 5.895 – 6.020 = -0.125.

• England: Played 1, Lost 1, Points 0. NRR: (310÷48) – (320÷50) = 6.458 – 6.400 = +0.058.

Standings:

1. Australia — 2 points, NRR +0.267

2. India — 2 points, NRR -0.125

3. England — 0 points, NRR +0.058

India and Australia are tied on 2 points, but Australia ranks higher due to a superior NRR. This example shows how NRR becomes the deciding factor when teams have equal points, exactly as it does in real tournaments.
