The foods you eat regularly have a cumulative impact on your long-term health, but it can be difficult to step back and objectively evaluate your overall dietary pattern. A Diet Risk Score Calculator helps you do exactly that by asking how frequently you consume nine common food categories ranging from fast food and sweet drinks to vegetables and fish and converting your answers into a numerical risk score. The tool weights unhealthy foods and healthy foods separately, then combines them into a total score that places you in one of four risk categories from low to very high. Whether you are assessing your baseline before making dietary changes, tracking progress over time, or simply curious about where your eating habits land on the health spectrum, Toolraxy provides a free, client-side calculator that turns your food frequency into a clear, actionable assessment.

How to Use the Diet Risk Score Calculator

  1. For each of the nine food categories, click the button that best describes how often you consume that food: Daily, 2โ€“3 times a week, Once a week, or Never.

  2. Complete all nine questions. The tool highlights any unanswered items.

  3. Click Calculate Score. The tool displays your unhealthy foods score, healthy foods score, total risk score out of 36 points, your risk category, and a personalized dietary message with recommendations.

How the Tool Works

This Diet Risk Score Calculator assigns points to each frequency response and separates foods into unhealthy and healthy categories to produce a composite risk score.

Scoring System:
Each frequency response is assigned a point value:

  • Daily: 4 points

  • 2โ€“3 times a week: 3 points

  • Once a week: 2 points

  • Never: 1 point

Food Categories:
Five food categories are classified as unhealthy:

  • Fast food

  • Bread and rolls

  • Chips, salty snacks, pretzels

  • Hot dogs, sausages

  • Sweet drinks

For these foods, higher consumption frequency means higher points, directly contributing to a higher risk score. Maximum unhealthy score: 5 foods ร— 4 points = 20 points.

Four food categories are classified as healthy:

  • Peanuts, seeds, nut butter

  • Fish, shellfish

  • Vegetables

  • Fruit

For these foods, the scoring is reversed because higher consumption is protective. The reversal formula is: Healthy Score = 5 – Raw Score. This means daily consumption contributes 1 point to the risk score, while never consuming contributes 4 points. Maximum healthy score: 4 foods ร— 4 points = 16 points.

Total Risk Score:
Total Score = Unhealthy Score + Healthy Score. Maximum possible: 20 + 16 = 36 points. Minimum possible: 5 + 4 = 9 points.

Risk Categories:

  • 0โ€“12 points: Low Risk (green)

  • 13โ€“20 points: Moderate Risk (yellow)

  • 21โ€“28 points: High Risk (red)

  • 29โ€“36 points: Very High Risk (dark red)

A progress bar visualizes the score as a percentage of the maximum. A personalized message is generated for each risk category with specific dietary recommendations.

Validation:
All nine questions must be answered before a score is calculated. Unanswered items are visually highlighted, and a warning message prompts the user to complete all questions.

Worked Example

Consider a person who reports the following consumption patterns:

Unhealthy foods:

  • Fast food: once a week = 2 points

  • Bread: daily = 4 points

  • Chips: 2โ€“3 times a week = 3 points

  • Hot dogs: never = 1 point

  • Sweet drinks: once a week = 2 points
Total unhealthy score: 12 out of 20.

Healthy foods:

  • Nuts: never โ†’ raw = 1, reversed = 4 points

  • Fish: once a week โ†’ raw = 2, reversed = 3 points

  • Vegetables: 2โ€“3 times a week โ†’ raw = 3, reversed = 2 points

  • Fruit: daily โ†’ raw = 4, reversed = 1 point
Total healthy score: 10 out of 16.

Total risk score: 12 + 10 = 22 points out of 36.
Risk category: High Risk (21โ€“28 points range).
Progress bar: approximately 61%, colored red.
Message: “Your diet indicates high risk. Significant changes are recommended: cut back on fast food, sugary drinks, and processed meats while eating more vegetables, fruits, and nuts.”

This person’s score reveals that their frequent bread and chip consumption, combined with inadequate vegetable and nut intake, places them in a high-risk category despite avoiding hot dogs and eating fruit daily. The detailed breakdown helps them identify specific areas for improvement rather than receiving a generic “eat healthier” message.

FAQs

How accurate is this diet risk score?
The score is based on established associations between food groups and health outcomes from nutritional epidemiology. It provides a reasonable snapshot of dietary patterns but is not a substitute for a comprehensive nutritional assessment by a professional.

Why is bread classified as an unhealthy food?
The classification reflects the typical Western diet where bread consumed is predominantly refined white bread. Whole-grain bread would be classified differently. If you eat exclusively whole-grain bread, you may mentally adjust this item or consider your score conservative.

Can I skip a question if I do not eat that food at all?
Select “Never” for foods you do not consume. The tool requires all nine questions to be answered to calculate a valid score.

What if my diet does not fit neatly into these nine categories?
The nine categories capture major food groups most strongly associated with health outcomes in research. Use the best-fit option for each. The tool is designed as a screening assessment, not an exhaustive dietary analysis.

How is the risk category determined?
Categories are based on score ranges: 0โ€“12 low, 13โ€“20 moderate, 21โ€“28 high, 29โ€“36 very high. These thresholds are designed to create meaningful differentiation between dietary patterns.

Does this calculator account for portion sizes?
No. The assessment is based on frequency of consumption, not quantity. This frequency-based approach is common in dietary screening tools and food frequency questionnaires.

Can I share my diet risk score?
Yes. Use the Copy button to copy all results, or the Share button to send a summary that includes your score and risk category.

Does this calculator store my dietary information?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. No personal dietary data is saved or transmitted.

Is this calculator a substitute for professional dietary advice?
No. This tool is for educational and self-assessment purposes. Consult a registered dietitian or healthcare professional for personalized nutrition guidance and before making significant dietary changes.

How can I improve my diet risk score?
Reduce frequency of fast food, sweet drinks, salty snacks, and processed meats. Increase daily consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish. Even small changesโ€”like replacing one sweet drink per day with waterโ€”can shift your score meaningfully over time.
