Typical sizes: kids 60×60×70 · adult 90×90×100 · large 120×120×110. Measure the empty cover — filled bean bags measure smaller.
Shape & fill level
The cover shape factor accounts for how "full" a box-shaped volume the cover actually holds. 90% fill is the most common recommendation.
Filler material
EPS beads are the most popular — light, quiet, long-lasting. Shredded foam is softer but compresses. Buckwheat hulls are very heavy and firm.

Introduction

Bean bag covers arrive empty. Filling them means guessing, ordering too little, and paying twice for shipping. This calculator skips that cycle. It measures the cover as a box, applies a shape factor that accounts for how the sewn fabric actually holds volume, then multiplies by a fill percentage. The result is a weight in kilograms. Divide by the weight of one filler bag and you know exactly how many to order. The tool handles EPS beads, shredded foam, memory foam, kapok, cotton blends, and buckwheat hulls. Each has its own density, and the difference matters. A bag of buckwheat weighs forty times what the same volume of polystyrene does. Everything runs in your browser.

How to Use the Bean Bag Filling Calculator

  1. Pick Metric or Imperial from the toggle.

  2. Measure the empty cover’s length, width, and height.

  3. Choose the cover shape that matches your bean bag.

  4. Set the fill level. Standard is 90%.

  5. Pick your filler material from the dropdown.

  6. Enter the weight per bag printed on your filler packaging.

  7. Read the total weight in the hero panel.

  8. Check the tiles for cover volume, filled volume, and bags needed.

How the Bean Bag Filling Calculator Formula Works

Three calculations chain together.

Formula: Cover volume (L) = L × W × H ÷ 1000 × shape factor
Formula: Filled volume (L) = cover volume × fill level
Formula: Total weight (kg) = filled volume × density (g/L) ÷ 1000
Formula: Bags needed = ceil(total weight ÷ bag weight)

The shape factor adjusts the box volume to match how much the cover actually holds when sewn. A standard rounded bean bag uses 55% of its bounding box. A boxy square cover uses 65%. A teardrop shape uses 45%. A round ball chair sits at 52%. These constants come from measuring real covers against their nominal dimensions.

Density varies wildly between fillers. EPS beads weigh 15 grams per litre. Shredded foam sits at 35 g/L. Memory foam reaches 50 g/L. Buckwheat hulls run 600 g/L, which means the same bean bag filled with buckwheat needs forty times the weight of one filled with polystyrene.

The tool rounds bag count up. You can’t buy 4.2 bags of filler. Leftover weight shows what’s left in the last bag. Validation catches zero or negative dimensions, and bad bag weights trigger an error instead of a nonsense number.

Worked Example

A standard adult bean bag cover measures 85 cm by 85 cm by 95 cm. The owner wants a firm fill at 95% using shredded foam, and the filler bags weigh 2 kg each.

Cover volume: 85 × 85 × 95 ÷ 1000 × 0.55 = 377.5 L
Filled volume: 377.5 × 0.95 = 358.6 L
Total weight: 358.6 × 35 ÷ 1000 = 12.55 kg

Bags needed: ceil(12.55 ÷ 2) = 7 bags
Total bought: 7 × 2 = 14 kg
Leftover: 14 − 12.55 = 1.45 kg

The badge reads “Extra-Large Bean Bag” because 12.55 kg crosses the 12 kg threshold.

If the same cover used EPS beads at 15 g/L, the weight would drop to 5.38 kg. That’s three bags of filler at 2 kg each, with 0.62 kg left over. The filler choice changes the order quantity by more than half.

How Much Filling Does a Bean Bag Need?

An adult bean bag needs 4 to 8 kg of EPS beads, or 8 to 12 kg of shredded foam. The exact figure depends on the cover’s volume and how firm you want it. A 90×90×100 cm cover at 90% fill holds 405 litres of space. EPS beads at 15 g/L fill that with about 6 kg. Shredded foam at 35 g/L needs around 14 kg. Same cover, very different weight.

How Many Bags of Filler for a Bean Bag?

Divide the total weight by the weight per bag and round up. A 5 kg requirement with 1 kg bags means 5 bags. With 500 g bags, you need 10. With 2.5 kg bags, 2. Always buy one extra bag for top-ups. Filler compresses about 10% in the first month as the beads settle. You’ll want that spare.

What Is the Best Filler for a Bean Bag?

EPS beads are the standard for good reason. They’re light, quiet, and keep their shape for years. Shredded foam is softer and quieter, but it compresses faster. Memory foam feels luxurious but costs more. Kapok is a natural plant fibre that’s biodegradable and dust-free, though it breaks down faster. Buckwheat hulls are the heaviest option and feel more like a traditional Japanese cushion. Pick by feel and budget, not just price per bag.

How Do You Measure a Bean Bag for Refilling?

Measure the empty cover, not a filled bag. Lay it flat and measure length, width, and the tallest point of the height. Filled bean bags measure smaller because the filler pulls the fabric in. Use the cover’s flat dimensions as your starting point. If the cover has an inner liner, measure that instead of the outer cover.

Why Does My Bean Bag Need Topping Up?

Two reasons. Beads compress under body weight over time. And EPS beads slowly escape through seams or when you sit down. A bean bag that felt full at purchase loses 10 to 20% of its volume in the first year of daily use. Topping up with 20% of the original fill weight keeps it at the right firmness. The calculator’s total weight makes a useful reference for that top-up calculation.

EPS Beads vs Shredded Foam: Which Should You Choose?

EPS beads hold their volume longer and don’t flatten. They’re louder when you sit down. Shredded foam is silent and softer but loses 30 to 40% of its loft within two years. Foam needs more frequent top-ups. Beads are also easier to pour through a funnel and don’t clump. Most commercial bean bags ship with EPS beads for these reasons.

How Do You Refill a Bean Bag?

Unzip the inner liner. Place a funnel or a rolled sheet of paper in the opening. Pour the filler in slowly, in small batches. Zip the liner closed and shake the bag to distribute the beads. Don’t overfill. Stop when the bag feels firm enough. A second person helps because filler spills easily and static makes beads cling to everything.

How Much Does Bean Bag Filler Cost?

A 100-litre bag of EPS beads costs $15 to $30 depending on quality. Shredded foam runs $20 to $40 for the same volume. Memory foam and kapok sit higher, usually $40 to $80. Buckwheat hulls cost $30 to $60 for a 10 kg sack. A standard adult bean bag needs 60 to 100 litres of fill, so budget $20 to $50 in filler for a refill project.

Can You Wash Bean Bag Filler?

EPS beads can be washed in a mesh bag with mild soap and air-dried. They take 24 to 48 hours to dry fully. Shredded foam doesn’t wash well and tends to clump permanently. Kapok is machine-washable on a gentle cycle. Buckwheat hulls should be replaced, not washed, because moisture causes mould. In practice, most people replace the filler rather than clean it.

How Often Should You Replace Bean Bag Filler?

EPS beads last three to five years before noticeable compression. Shredded foam needs replacing every 12 to 18 months. Memory foam holds up two to three years. Buckwheat hulls last a decade if kept dry. Signs it’s time to replace: the bag bottoms out when you sit, beads crunch loudly, or the shape collapses within minutes.

Common Mistakes When Filling a Bean Bag

Overfilling is the most common error. A bean bag packed to 100% feels stiff and uninviting. Ninety percent is the sweet spot for comfort. Buying filler in small bags costs more per kilogram than larger bags. And measuring a filled cover instead of the empty one gives you the wrong dimensions. Finally, don’t fill on carpet. Beads go everywhere, and static makes them cling to fibres.
