Introduction

Fuel economy numbers tell you how efficiently your vehicle uses gas, but calculating them by hand across different measurement systems can be confusing. An MPG Calculator takes the distance you traveled and the fuel you consumed whether measured in miles, kilometers, US gallons, UK gallons, or liters and instantly gives you your fuel economy in all four major formats: MPG US, MPG UK, L/100km, and km/L. Beyond the efficiency numbers, it also calculates the total trip cost based on your fuel price and splits that cost among passengers. Whether you are tracking your car’s real-world fuel economy, comparing vehicles, or figuring out what a road trip actually cost in fuel, Toolraxy provides a free, client-side MPG Calculator that does all the unit conversions automatically.

Β

How to Use the MPG Calculator

  1. Select your preferred currency from the dropdown at the top.

  2. Enter the distance you traveled and choose miles or kilometers.

  3. Enter the amount of fuel you used and select the unit: US gallons, UK gallons, or liters.

  4. Enter the fuel price and select the pricing unit: per US gallon, per UK gallon, or per liter.

  5. Enter the number of passengers if you want to split the total cost.

  6. Click Calculate. The tool displays your fuel economy in MPG US, MPG UK, L/100km, and km/L, plus total fuel consumed, total cost, cost per person, cost per distance unit, and estimated CO2 emissions.

Β

How the Tool Works

This MPG Calculator normalizes all distance and fuel inputs, calculates fuel economy in all four standard formats, and then computes the trip cost.

Normalization:
All distances are converted to miles internally. If kilometers are entered, the value is multiplied by 0.621371. All fuel volumes are converted to US gallons: UK gallons are multiplied by 1.20095, and liters are divided by 3.78541.

Fuel Economy Calculations:

  • MPG (US) = Distance (miles) Γ· Fuel (US gallons)

  • MPG (UK) = MPG (US) Γ— 1.20095

  • Total liters = Fuel (US gallons) Γ— 3.78541

  • Total kilometers = Distance (miles) Γ— 1.60934

  • L/100km = (Total liters Γ· Total kilometers) Γ— 100

  • km/L = Total kilometers Γ· Total liters

Cost Calculation:
Total cost is computed from the fuel volume and price:

  • Per US gallon: Cost = Gallons (US) Γ— Price

  • Per UK gallon: Cost = (Gallons US Γ· 1.20095) Γ— Price

  • Per liter: Cost = Total liters Γ— Price

Additional Outputs:

  • Fuel consumed: displayed in both liters and US gallons

  • Cost per person: Total Cost Γ· Number of Passengers

  • Cost per distance unit: Total Cost Γ· Distance (in the user’s selected unit)

  • CO2 estimate: Total liters Γ— 2.31 kg CO2 per liter

All inputs are validated. If distance or fuel used is zero or missing, the calculator displays prompts rather than invalid results.

Β

Worked Example

Suppose you drove 300 miles and used 12 US gallons of fuel, with gas at $3.50 per gallon and 2 passengers:

  1. MPG (US): 300 Γ· 12 = 25.0 mpg.

  2. MPG (UK): 25.0 Γ— 1.20095 β‰ˆ 30.0 mpg.

  3. Total liters: 12 Γ— 3.78541 β‰ˆ 45.42 liters.

  4. Total kilometers: 300 Γ— 1.60934 β‰ˆ 482.8 km.

  5. L/100km: (45.42 Γ· 482.8) Γ— 100 β‰ˆ 9.4 L/100km.

  6. km/L: 482.8 Γ· 45.42 β‰ˆ 10.63 km/L.

  7. Total cost: 12 Γ—Β 3.50=42.00.

  8. Cost per person:Β 42.00Γ·2=21.00.

  9. Cost per mile:Β 42.00Γ·300=0.14 per mile.

  10. CO2 estimate: 45.42 Γ— 2.31 β‰ˆ 104.9 kg CO2.

If you instead entered the same trip in kilometers and liters – 482.8 km and 45.42 liters – the calculator would produce the identical results, converting everything internally. This cross-system compatibility means you never need to manually convert between measurement systems again.

Real-World Scenario for an MPG Calculator

A car owner suspects their vehicle’s fuel economy has dropped and wants to check it against the manufacturer’s rating of 28 mpg. They fill the tank, reset the trip odometer, drive 350 miles, and refill with 14.5 gallons. Entering these numbers into the calculator: MPG US = 350 Γ· 14.5 β‰ˆ 24.1 mpg, well below the rated 28. The calculator also shows this as 11.7 L/100km. The owner investigates and discovers underinflated tires and a dirty air filter, two issues that, once fixed, restore the vehicle’s efficiency and save money on future fill-ups.

FAQs

How accurate is this MPG calculator?
The calculator uses standard conversion factors with high precision. It provides accurate calculations based on the numbers you enter. The accuracy of your MPG result depends on the accuracy of your distance and fuel measurements.

Can I calculate my fuel economy in L/100km?
Yes. Enter your distance in kilometers and your fuel in liters, and the calculator will display L/100km along with MPG US, MPG UK, and km/L. All four formats are shown regardless of your input units.

What is the difference between US gallons and UK gallons in this calculator?
The calculator uses 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters and 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 liters. Select the appropriate unit based on how your fuel was measured or priced.

How do I measure fuel used accurately?
Fill your tank completely and reset your trip odometer. Drive until you need fuel again, then fill the tank completely once more. The amount of fuel from the second fill-up is the fuel used for the distance on your trip odometer.

Why does my real-world MPG differ from the manufacturer’s rating?
Manufacturer ratings are obtained under controlled laboratory conditions. Real-world driving involves traffic, weather, varying speeds, cargo, and terrain that all affect fuel consumption. A 10–20% difference is common.

Can I use this calculator for diesel vehicles?
Yes. The fuel economy and cost calculations are identical. The CO2 estimate uses the gasoline factor; multiply by approximately 1.16 for a diesel-specific estimate.

Does the calculator store my fuel or trip data?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. No personal, vehicle, or trip data is saved or transmitted.

Can I share my fuel economy results?
Yes. Use the Copy button to copy all results to your clipboard, or the Share button to send a summary that includes MPG, cost, and CO2 data.

What is a good MPG for a car?
For a gasoline-powered sedan, 25–35 mpg US is typical. Hybrids achieve 40–55 mpg. SUVs and trucks typically range from 15–25 mpg. Any vehicle achieving above 30 mpg US is considered fuel-efficient by current standards.

How can I improve my fuel economy?
Maintain proper tire pressure, replace air filters regularly, avoid aggressive acceleration and braking, reduce excess cargo weight, and adhere to recommended service intervals. Even small improvements in MPG translate to meaningful savings over a year of driving.
