Rising fuel prices make it more important than ever to know exactly what a journey will cost before you set out. A Fuel Cost Calculator helps you estimate the total fuel expense for any trip by combining your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, the distance you plan to travel, current fuel prices, and the number of people sharing the ride. Beyond a simple cost estimate, this tool lets you compare two vehicles side by side to see which is more economical for a given journey, and it calculates your carbon dioxide emissions based on fuel consumption. Whether you are planning a road trip, budgeting for a daily commute, splitting costs among carpool passengers, or deciding between two cars for a long drive, Toolraxy provides a free, client-side calculator that gives you the numbers you need in any currency.
How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator
Select your preferred currency from the dropdown at the top of the tool.
Enter the distance of your trip and choose kilometers or miles.
Select whether your trip is one way or a round trip.
Enter the number of passengers to split the cost per person.
Enter your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and select the appropriate unit (L/100km, km/L, mpg US, or mpg UK).
Enter the current fuel price and select the pricing unit (per liter, per US gallon, or per UK gallon).
Optionally, click “Show Comparison” to add a second vehicle with different efficiency and fuel price for a side-by-side cost analysis.
Click Calculate. The tool displays total distance, fuel needed, total cost, cost per person, cost per unit distance, and estimated CO2 emissions.
How the Tool Works
This Fuel Cost Calculator converts all distance and fuel efficiency inputs to a common metric baseline, calculates fuel consumption, and then applies the fuel price to determine total cost.
Distance Handling:
All distances are converted to kilometers internally. If miles are selected, the value is multiplied by 1.60934. For round trips, the distance is doubled. Total trip distance is displayed in the user’s chosen unit.
Fuel Consumption Calculation:
Fuel efficiency is converted to liters consumed based on the selected efficiency unit:
L/100km: Fuel (L) = (Efficiency × Total Distance in km) ÷ 100
km/L: Fuel (L) = Total Distance in km ÷ Efficiency
mpg (US): Fuel (L) = (Total Distance in miles ÷ Efficiency) × 3.78541
mpg (UK): Fuel (L) = (Total Distance in miles ÷ Efficiency) × 4.54609
Fuel Cost Calculation:
The fuel price is converted to a per-liter cost based on the selected unit:
Per liter: Cost = Fuel (L) × Price
Per US gallon: Cost = (Fuel (L) ÷ 3.78541) × Price
Per UK gallon: Cost = (Fuel (L) ÷ 4.54609) × Price
Additional Calculations:
Cost per person: Total Cost ÷ Number of Passengers
Cost per unit distance: Total Cost ÷ Total Distance (in user’s chosen unit)
CO2 estimate: Fuel (L) × 2.31 kg CO2 per liter (standard gasoline combustion factor)
Vehicle Comparison:
When the comparison feature is enabled, a second vehicle with its own efficiency and fuel price is calculated using the same trip parameters. The vehicle with the lower total cost is highlighted in green as the winner. This allows direct A/B comparison for the same journey.
All inputs are validated. If distance, efficiency, or price is zero or missing, the calculator displays prompts rather than incorrect results.
Worked Example
Consider a one-way trip of 300 km in a car with fuel efficiency of 8.0 L/100km, fuel priced at $1.50 per liter, with 3 passengers sharing the cost:
Distance: 300 km (one way, so total distance remains 300 km).
Fuel needed: (8.0 × 300) ÷ 100 = 24.0 liters.
Total fuel cost: 24.0 × 1.50=1.50=36.00.
Cost per person: 36.00÷3=36.00÷3=12.00 per person.
Cost per km: 36.00÷300=36.00÷300=0.12 per km.
CO2 estimate: 24.0 × 2.31 = 55.4 kg CO2.
If the same trip were a round trip, the total distance would double to 600 km, fuel needed would be 48.0 liters, total cost 72.00, and cost per person 24.00.
Now, using the vehicle comparison feature with a second car at 10.0 L/100km and fuel at 1.80 per liter, the second vehicle would consume 30.0 liters and cost 54.00 for the one-way trip. The first vehicle is highlighted as the winner, saving $18.00 on this journey. Over multiple trips, this comparison could guide a vehicle purchase or rental decision.

FAQs
How accurate is this fuel cost calculator?
The calculator uses standard conversion factors and the CO2 emission factor of 2.31 kg per liter of gasoline. It is accurate for planning, though actual fuel consumption varies with driving style, traffic, road conditions, and vehicle load.
Can I compare a petrol car with a diesel car?
Yes. Enter the efficiency and fuel price for each vehicle. Use the comparison feature to see which is cheaper for your specific trip, accounting for different fuel types and prices.
What is the difference between US mpg and UK mpg?
A US gallon is approximately 3.785 liters. A UK gallon is approximately 4.546 liters. The calculator handles this difference automatically based on your unit selection.
How is the cost per person calculated?
The total fuel cost is divided by the number of passengers you enter. The driver is included in the passenger count.
Does the calculator account for electric vehicles?
The current version is designed for liquid fuel vehicles. For electric vehicles, you would need to manually convert electricity cost per kWh and efficiency in kWh per distance unit.
How is the CO2 estimate calculated?
CO2 is estimated by multiplying fuel consumption in liters by 2.31 kg/L. This is the standard factor for gasoline. Diesel produces approximately 2.68 kg/L.
Can I calculate fuel cost for a round trip?
Yes. Select “Round Trip” and the distance you enter will be doubled automatically before calculation.
Does this calculator store my trip data?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. No personal or trip data is saved or transmitted to any server.
Can I share my fuel cost estimate with others?
Yes. Use the Copy button to copy all results to your clipboard, or the Share button to send a summary via your device’s native sharing options.
What currencies are supported?
The calculator includes 36 major currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, INR, and many more, all sortable by country code.
