How the Tool Works

This calculator determines material quantities by dividing wall dimensions by block dimensions (rounding up), then calculating backfill volume and applying densities.

Formulas:

Number of Rows = ceil(Wall Height ÷ Block Height)
Blocks per Row = ceil(Wall Length ÷ Block Length)
Total Wall Blocks = Rows × Blocks per Row
Cap Blocks = (if cap row requested) Blocks per Row
Backfill Volume (m³) = Thickness × Length × Height
Backfill Weight (kg) = Volume × 1,600 kg/m³ (gravel density)

Mathematical Structure:

  • Rows: How many stacked block courses to reach wall height (always rounds up)

  • Blocks per Row: How many blocks side-by-side to reach wall length (always rounds up)

  • Backfill Volume: Rectangular prism calculation for gravel behind the wall

  • Gravel Density: Fixed at 1,600 kg/m³ (typical for crushed stone or drainage gravel)

  • Total Cost: (Wall Blocks × Wall Block Price) + (Cap Blocks × Cap Block Price) + (Backfill kg × Gravel Price per kg)

Calculation Logic:

  1. Standardize Inputs: Convert all dimensions to meters for length/height, cm for block dimensions.

    • ft → m: × 0.3048

    • cm → m: ÷ 100

    • inches → m: × 0.0254

  2. Calculate Rows: Wall height ÷ block height, rounded up (ceil).

  3. Calculate Blocks per Row: Wall length ÷ block length, rounded up (ceil).

  4. Calculate Cap Blocks: If cap row requested, equals blocks per row.

  5. Calculate Backfill Volume: Backfill thickness × backfill length × backfill height.

  6. Calculate Backfill Weight: Volume × 1,600 kg/m³ (standard gravel density).

  7. Calculate Costs: Multiply quantities by respective prices, sum for total.

Worked Example

Scenario: A homeowner is building a garden retaining wall and needs a complete material and cost estimate.

  • Wall Height: 1.2 meters

  • Wall Length: 6 meters

  • Block Height: 20 cm (0.2 m)

  • Block Length: 40 cm (0.4 m)

  • Cap Row: Yes

  • Backfill Thickness: 30 cm (0.3 m)

  • Backfill Length: 6 meters

  • Backfill Height: 1.2 meters

  • Wall Block Price: $ 3.50 each

  • Cap Block Price: $ 5.00 each

  • Gravel Price: $ 0.05 per kg

  • Currency: USD

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Rows: ceil(1.2 m ÷ 0.2 m) = ceil(6) = 6 rows

  2. Blocks per Row: ceil(6 m ÷ 0.4 m) = ceil(15) = 15 blocks

  3. Total Wall Blocks: 6 rows × 15 blocks = 90 blocks

  4. Cap Blocks: 15 blocks (one cap per block in top row)

  5. Backfill Volume: 0.3 m × 6 m × 1.2 m = 2.16 m³

  6. Backfill Weight: 2.16 m³ × 1,600 kg/m³ = 3,456 kg

  7. Wall Block Cost: 90 × 3.50= 315.00

  8. Cap Block Cost: 15 × 5.00 = 75.00

  9. Gravel Cost: 3,456 kg × 0.05 = 172.80

  10. Total Cost: 315.00 +  75.00 + 172.80=  562.80

Interpretation & Takeaway:
The retaining wall requires 90 standard blocks and 15 cap blocks, plus nearly 3.5 tons of gravel backfill. Total material cost is $ 563, excluding delivery, base gravel, drainage pipe, and labor.

Real-World Example Scenario: Terraced Garden Wall

Problem: A landscaper is building a terraced garden wall. The wall is 0.9 meters high, 12 meters long. Available blocks are 15 cm high and 30 cm long. Backfill area is 12m long, 0.3m thick, 0.9m high. Gravel costs 0.08 per kg. Blocks cost  2.80 each, caps $ 4.20 each. What is total material cost?

Calculation using logic:

  • Rows = ceil(0.9 ÷ 0.15) = ceil(6) = 6 rows

  • Blocks per row = ceil(12 ÷ 0.3) = ceil(40) = 40 blocks

  • Wall blocks = 6 × 40 = 240 blocks

  • Cap blocks = 40 (cap row requested)

  • Backfill volume = 0.3m × 12m × 0.9m = 3.24 m³

  • Backfill kg = 3.24 × 1,600 = 5,184 kg

  • Wall block cost = 240 × 2.80= 672

  • Cap block cost = 40 × 4.20=168

  • Gravel cost = 5,184 × 0.08  414.72

  • Total = $ 1,254.72

Result: The landscaper needs 240 wall blocks, 40 cap blocks, and over 5 metric tons of gravel critical information for truck rental and delivery scheduling.

FAQs

How accurate is this retaining wall calculator?
It is mathematically exact for straight walls without corners or stepped foundations. Add 5-10% waste for cuts and breakage.

What is a cap row and do I need one?
A cap row is the top course of blocks, often larger or differently shaped for a finished look. Cap rows also protect the wall from water infiltration.

Why does the calculator round up block counts?
Because you cannot buy a fraction of a block. Rounding up ensures you have enough material even if the last block needs cutting.

Does this account for blocks buried below ground level?
No. The first row is often partially buried (below grade). Add one extra row for buried depth in frost-prone areas.

What is the gravel density used for backfill weight?
The calculator uses 1,600 kg/m³, the standard density for crushed drainage stone. Adjust your price per kg if using lighter or heavier material.

Can I use this for concrete poured walls instead of block walls?
No. This calculator is designed for modular block retaining walls. Poured concrete requires volume (cubic meters) and rebar calculations.

What is the difference between wall height and backfill height?
They are often the same. Backfill fills the space behind the wall for the full wall height. For tiered walls, backfill height may differ.

Does this calculator include base gravel or drainage pipe?
No. Base gravel (under the first row) and perforated drainage pipe are additional material costs not included.

How do I calculate blocks for a curved retaining wall?
Curved walls require more blocks because blocks on the outside of the curve need cutting or specialty curved blocks. Add 15-25% extra.

Why does backfill volume use wall length but different thickness?
Backfill typically runs the full wall length but is a fixed thickness behind the wall (like a rectangular prism), not the same as wall dimensions.

Disclaimer

This retaining wall calculator provides estimates for planning purposes only. Actual material requirements depend on soil conditions, wall slope, frost depth, local building codes, and engineering specifications. Walls over 1.2 meters (4 feet) may require engineering approval and additional reinforcement (geogrid, deadmen, or concrete footings). Toolraxy is not responsible for wall failure, property damage, or code violations resulting from the use of these estimates. Always consult a structural engineer or licensed contractor for retaining walls exceeding local height limits.
